Health and Fitness Week

Welcome to UPEI Health and Fitness Week 2019! We have many events and activities planned for this week to involve students, staff and faculty. A committee representing each of these groups came together to plan the best Health and Fitness Week possible. We are excited to present to you a schedule jam-packed with activities you can attend, with focuses ranging from mental health, nutrition, physical activity and general health and wellness!

All events are free to attend unless otherwise indicated. We hope that you participate in as many of these activities as you can! Activities brought to you by the UPEI Healthy Campus Committee. 


Monday, November 18 

Learn to Skate
Come out and learn how to skate!
Location: MacLauchlan Arena

Getting a Restful Sleep Session
Sleep is critical to ensure maximum productivity. It increases your ability to concentrate and focus, allows you to approach challenges with a more positive attitude, and can have positive effects on your memory and health. Participants will learn about circadian rhythms and the impact that disrupting these key biological processes can have on their day-to-day activities and work. This seminar will also describe sleep's vital role in maintaining health along with valuable and practical tips and strategies that participants can apply to get quality, restful sleep and stay alert. Light refreshments provided.

Pilates Yoga Fusion Class
Combining the benefits of yoga poses and Pilates exercises with breath awareness and relaxation. Develop your core strength and stabilization, as well as increasing your joint flexibility and muscular strength.

Succulent Plant Party
We will be providing you with all the supplies needed to create your own succulent plant and pot. Pre-registration is required with a fee of $10 per person. Please email Angela Marchbank at amarchbank@upei.ca to register. For UPEI students, staff, and faculty members only!

Sculpt 'n Chisel Class
This class is a dynamic and multifaceted workout designed to improve your overall fitness level; including strength and flexibility. A full body workout engaging the core, legs, glutes, and arms.

Tuesday, November 19 

Self Care Expo
Shoulder and hand massages, acupressure, Reiki, Humble Barber, hearing tests, healthy living information, take a picture with Pride!, etc. Free healthy food available. Draw prizes including a pair of Beats headphones, Apple AirPods, plus other great prizes.

You will learn how to pair your breath with movement in ways to release stress and decompress tension. Please take your own yoga mat and water.

Come learn basic yoga positions and techniques; doing this helps us foster a calm and relaxed state to help carry us through the week to come!

Wednesday, November 20 

Soup for the Soul
Come and enjoy some hearty, warm soup to warm your soul. Cheesy cream of broccoli and vegetable soups prepared and served by staff of UPEI's International Student Office and Recruitment.
Location: Chaplaincy Centre
Time: 11:30 am–1:15 pm (or until we run out) 

Flex 'n Stretch Session
Come learn about why we should be getting up and sitting less during the day. We will share information about the negative health effects of inactivity, and Stephanie will give participants examples of stretching exercises and how people can get extra strength. Light refreshments provided.

Plant Swap - House Plant Q and A 
Peter Meijer with VanKampen's Greenhouse will lead a question and answer session on how to care for your house plants. Take in some plant slips from home and trade with others at the session.

Designed to bring people together by providing great exercise by mixing low and high intensity moves for a calorie burning fitness party.

Community Connections - Newcomers Association

Glucose and Cholesterol Clinic
Have your glucose and cholesterol tested! No appointments necessary, just drop in. Testing takes approximately 6–8 minutes per person.

Healthy Feet Presentation
Neal Jamieson from Reactive Health, will discuss foot care and how it can affect us if we have poor foot health. He'll highlight some common foot health issues and treatments, review foot anatomy, discuss proper footwear, and discuss foot reflexology.  No pre-registration required.

UPEI Student, Staff, and Faculty Wellness Night 
Panther Women's and Men's Basketball home games - FREE night! UPEI Women's Basketball vs. CBU at 6:00 pm; UPEI Men's Basketball vs. CBU at 8:00pm. Wear green to be seen and fill your head and hearts with PRIDE! Just show up and present your Campus Card to gain access. DJ Laura O'Laney on the decks, cheer team, and Build-a-Sub competitions! We'll also hold a Pep Rally starting at International Student Office at 5:15 pm to go via AVC and the Wanda Wyatt Dining Hall and arrive at the Fox and Crow for face painting and chant rehearsals. From there, on to the Chi-Wan Young Sports Centre for the Games. Rally your fellow students, athletes, staff, and faculty!
Time: 5:15 pm - Pep Rally; 6:00 pm - Women's Basketball game; 8:00 pm - Men's Basketball game.
