Description: Granted to a student entering fourth year of the Nursing program, who is not already receiving another donor-funded award and, in keeping with the IODE's mission, has demonstrated community service to improve the quality of life for those in need.
Background: The mission of the IODE, a Canadian women's charitable organization, is to improve the quality of life for children, youth and those in need, through educational, social service and citizenship programs. This annual award was established by the Royal Edward Chapter IODE in Charlottetown. PEI's Royal Edward Chapter began in 1901 as the ninth chapter of Imperial Order Daughters of the Empire formed in Canada. At the present time, it is the oldest functioning chapter in Canada. In 2018, the Royal Edward Chapter IODE - whose current and forward thinking members include Jean Burch, Kathryn Archibald, Helen MacPhail, Shirley Johnson, Ruth Brewer, Sister Mary DeCourcey, and Irene Gallant - generously decided to provide a major gift to endow this award through an estate gift received from one of its members, Margaret A. Kennedy (1925-2018). Margaret was a member of the IODE Royal Edward Chapter since 1975 and actively promoted the mission of the IODE. She was a life member of both the national and local chapters, and her gift to the IODE Royal Edward Chapter was one of many that she bequeathed in her Will to charitable organizations.
