Description: Awarded to an undergraduate student in the Faculty of Business or Faculty of Science who has expressed inquisitiveness and desire to learn, shows leadership, is a team player, contributes to UPEI or the general community in a meaningful manner and is in financial need.
Background: Dr. John H. Maloney of Charlottetown was a loving husband to Marguerite Jobe Maloney and dear father to Peter, Leslie, Eric, Tara, and Valerie. He was also blessed with five grandchildren. Dr. Maloney enjoyed a distinguished career as a physician and former provincial cabinet minister. He served as the Chief of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Charlottetown Hospital, was a member of the medical staff at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, and a consultant to hospitals in both Alberton and O'Leary. Dr. Maloney left many lasting legacies on Prince Edward Island. He was a founding member of the Charlottetown Clinic, and was instrumental in establishing the P.E.I. Museum and Heritage Foundation. He was an important contributor to the business community through his work in establishing the Charlottetown Area Development Corporation, the Summerside Development Corporation and the Island's first industrial park in West Royalty. He had a strong vision for Prince Edward Island which was a key factor in the introduction of Medicare on the Island, as well as in the upgrading of the educational system through new school construction and the creation of both Holland College and UPEI. In recognition of his achievements, Dr. Maloney was awarded the Centennial Medal in 1967 and was posthumously awarded the Prince Edward Island Order of Merit Medal in June 2001. Dr. Maloney passed away on May 10, 2001 at the age of 83. To honour and continue the work of their father in bettering life for Islanders, his family has created the Dr. John H. Maloney Scholarship in Science and Business.
