Description: Awarded to a returning student with a declared major or minor in Computer Science and who has an overall average of 70% or greater.
Background: Laura Kathleen Alexis Cauty was born on December 28, 1982 in Ottawa, Ontario. When she was one year old, the family moved to Charlottetown, PEI where she was raised and went to school. With tremendous dedication and perseverance. Laura earned her General Education Development diploma. In 2002, she completes a one year youth internship at Human Resources Canada and was a team member of the Youth Project Group which implemented youthpath.ca. In September 2002, she entered the Business Information Technology Program at Holland College where her specialty was Network Administrator. In July 2003, Laura obtained her A+ Certification and Certified Novell Administrator diplomas. Laura graduated from Holland College in May 2004. In September 2004 Laura went to the University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI) with the goal of majoring in Business Administration. From the summer of 2003 through September 2006 she worked part time at Veterans Affairs Canada providing technological support at the Help Desk. In September 2006 Laura was hired by Research in Motion (RIM), a leading designer, manufacturer and marketer of wireless technology, PDA design and service, located in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Laura was continuing to develop her knowledge and skills and was excelling in her work when she was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma in January, 2007. Laura passed away on September 18, 2007. Laura was intelligent, motivated and loved children. She faded her illness with the strength and determination she exhibited in other areas of her life. In both her academic courses and in her work, Laura enjoyed learning about information technology and was able to use her strong communication skills to apply this knowledge when providing support and assisting other people with their computer problems. She possessed many skills and characteristics that are essential to succeed in the world of business today. This scholarship has been created in Laura's memory for students with similar qualities and interests and is intended to help them achieve their academic and career goals.
