What is Clicker Training?

WHAT CAN DOGS LEARN WITH CLICKER TRAINING??

Dogs can be taught ANYTHING with clicker training! They can learn simple commands such as "Sit", "Stay", and "Lay". For instance, if you are trying to teach Fido to sit, you simply click as his bum is going down towards the floor and then give the treat. When Fido begins to understand why he is being clicked and treated, you start adding the word "Sit". But remember, to still click! Dogs can also learn how to behave calmly, not jump up, or not to bark (click when the dog is being quiet). The possibilities are endless!

HOW ARE THE DOGS TAUGHT?

The dogs are taught using clicker training. This uses positive reinforcement to shape the dogs to do the commands we ask. The dogs learn that a "Click" means a treat! The "Click" comes WHILE the dog is doing what we want and the treat follows right after. The "Click" is much easier for a dog to understand
than words and it sounds the same no matter who is training the dog.

HOW CAN I LEARN MORE ABOUT CLICKER TRAINING??

There are many sources, both on the web and in books and videos, that can help you on the path to clicker training your dog. We have also set up an e-mail so please write us if you have any training or behavioral questions about your dog. Or feel free to leave us a message at the shelter and we'll return your phone call within 48 hours.
Behavior E-mail avctrainers@upei.ca or call PEI Humane Society (902)892-1190.

Clicker training can provide you with a happy relationship with your dog and really help to establish a bond. Wouldn't it be a lot more fun for you and your dog if you could train him without hitting, pushing, or hurting him? Dogs really enjoy clicker training! They're doing behaviors they already know how to do and getting rewarded for them. They think this is great fun! And it's fun for us too!
