Welcome from the Dean of Nursing

The School of Nursing at the University of Prince Edward Island welcomes you to our Web-page. Prince Edward Island was the first province in Canada to adopt baccalaureate education as the exclusive entry to nursing practice. This decision placed us in the forefront of the initiative across Canada to locate nursing education at the university level.

The School of Nursing opened in 1992. We are proud of our bright, hard-working students, and excited to be offering a curriculum philosophically grounded in the principles of primary health care.

What differentiates this curriculum from more traditional ones is that our graduates expect

  • to work in partnership with their clients (both individuals and groups) on goals the client has selected
  • to focus on health promotion and disease prevention, as well as caring for patients who are ill
  • to support the appropriate use of technology in the provision of health care
  • to collaborate with a variety of both traditional and non-traditional professionals and organizations in the provision of health care.

Our graduates are employed in a variety of settings and locations.

Our classes are small, and both students and faculty benefit from having the chance to get to know one another well. Full-time faculty do all the classroom instruction as well as participate in the supervision of clinical experience. We also recruit expert practicing nurses as part-time sessional instructors.

Our students have at least 1600 hours of clinical experience in both acute care and community agencies, both on and off the Island. A few of our students have had an international experience as part of their senior year.

We welcome inquiries about us, our program, and our Island University.
