It provides an excellent opportunity for review as well as observation of muscle spindles. Look for:
  • tibia + fibula
  • medullary + cortical bone
  • cellular and fibrous periosteum
  • XS of skeletal muscle and tendon
  • myelinated nerve bundles, associated with skeletal muscle and sensory endings
  • small red and large white muscle fibers
  • approximately 8-l0 muscle spindle organs scattered throughout the muscles
Muscle spindle organs include:
  • a distinct perimysium
  • muscle fibers with central nuclei
  • myelinated nerves running along the muscle fibers
  • usually a space surrounding them
