Introduction to Blood and Connective Tissues

Blood Smears

The blood smears in our class set include:

  • canine slide 151
  • feline slide 152
  • bovine slide 153
  • equine slide 154
  • avian slide 155
  • trout slide 156

By scanning the edges and 'feathered' end of the smears, you are more likely to find white blood cells. In all species, you should be able to locate erythrocytes, platelets (thrombocytes), granulocytes (the three kinds in mammals), and agranulocytes (distinguish lymphocytes and monocytes in mammals). Don't spend very much time looking for basophils ... they are simply too rare. If you happen upon one, please ask an instructor to verify your diagnosis, then show it to your benchmates.
