American Samoa is located in the mid South Pacific, 2600 miles from Honolulu, and totals 76 square miles. The Islands are home to a population of 46,773 people (1990), most of whom live on Tutuila. American Samoa is an unincorporated territory of the United States, whereby its citizens are U.S. nationals able to freely enter the United States; an estimated 65,000 Samoans have migrated to the West Coast and some 20,000 live in Hawaii. American Samoa has an important tuna processing industry, and Pago Pago, a great natural harbor, has dry dock and port facilities. The government is the biggest employer in American Samoa.
