The development and delivery of high quality diagnostic services to aquaculture producers through a broad range of Veterinary disciplines strengthens the contact with industry and provides numerous related teaching and research opportunities. Research and continuing education focused on aquaculture contributes to the scientific base of knowledge about health and disease management, and provides veterinarians with the skills necessary to apply this vital information at the community and farm level.

To fulfil this commitment the Atlantic Veterinary College, with the cooperation of the academic community, industry, government, and other regional support services, identified these objectives:

  • To incorporate aquatic species into all aspects of Veterinary Medicine and Veterinary Education at the Atlantic Veterinary College
  • To develop and provide an expanding range of diagnostic techniques and approaches pertinent to the aquaculture industries of North America and specifically tailored to the needs of Atlantic Canada
  • To develop a collaborative and balanced basic and applied research programme focused on the health related problems of aquaculture industries
  • To network globally with researchers and those involved in fish-related industries in order to facilitate the exchange of research findings and expertise
  • To offer courses in continuing education on fish and shellfish disease for veterinarians
