The Atlantic Veterinary College (AVC) of the University of Prince Edward Island, in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, is one of four veterinary colleges in Canada and serves the veterinary education needs of Atlantic Canada. The AVC has offered modern teaching facilities for the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine and Masters of Science programmes since opening in 1986. Fish Health has been incorporated into the general veterinary curriculum as a food animal species and involves many veterinary disciplines within the AVC.

ACADEMIC PROGRAMMES

Undergraduate Students entering the four-year professional programme leading to a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree require at least two years of University training, including specific required courses. The professional curriculum includes training in all domestic species including fish. Aquatic species are integrated throughout many courses in the first two years such as animal production, anatomy, physiology, immunology, parasitology, bacteriology and clinical orientation. In the second year, a full semester course Aquaculture and Fish Health is a practical course stressing fish biology, aquaculture, disease diagnosis, treatment and management of important commercial and ornamental species of fish. IN the fourth year, there are specialty clinical and diagnostic rotations that students can select to further their experience in fish disease diagnosis and therapy.

GRADUATE PROGRAMME

The Masters of Science degree (Msc) of the University of Prince Edward Island offers the opportunity to develop skills in one concentrated field of study. Students are required to achieve satisfactory standings in a minimum of four graduate courses, complete a research project, and write a thesis based upon this research.

A Doctor of Philosophy degree (PhD) has recently been approved and it is expected that Fish Health research will be a substantial part of the PhD programme.
