Registration Deadline: November 25, 2002

Location:WU Conference Centre, University of New Brunswick, Fredericton, N.B.

The registration fee includes includes nutrition breaks, lunch, copy of course proceedings.

About this Course
Many aquaculture facilities have converted to using water recirculation technology because of the increased levels of control over the culture environment that it offers, the reduction in the environmental influences on their fish and the reduction of the facility influences on the environment. The management of water recirculation facilities requires more knowledge and skills applied to water quality treatment processes, water quality monitoring and fish health issues in such systems. This course is designed to give experienced aquaculture managers more background and understanding of the biological, chemical, and physical processes that occur in water recirculation systems and their interactions with fish health.

Course Details

December 2, 2002
Session One - Physiology and Engineering

  • Production Physiology:
    Physiology of consumption and excretion (ie. gas transfer requirements, nutrients, ammonia, and other waste products etc.)
  • Engineering for Better Health:
    * Solids management practices
    * Gas transfer practices
    * Ammonia removal practices

Session Two - Non Infectious Diseases and Engineering

  • Non Infectious Diseases
    * A review of the role of noninfectious diseases in intensive aquaculture Case studies and examples of non-infectious diseases

December 3, 2002
Session Three - Infectious Diseases and Engineering

  • Infectious Diseases
    * Diseases introduced by fish e.g. BKD, furunculosis, Mycobacterium
    * Principles of disease transmission in recirc compared to flow-through
    * Disease regulations (i.e. FHPR certification) and their relationship to protection in recirc

  • Engineering for Better Health:
    * Water Sterilization Practices

  • Biosecurity and Health Management in Recirculation
    * Disease prevention through detection and avoidance of previously infected fish
    * Biosecurity for personnel and equipment
    * Disease treatments in recirculation - differing approach in closed environment
    * Issues around vaccination in recirc hatcheries

  • Engineering for Better Health:
    * Designing for system management and disease treatment
