BIOLOGY 111 - INTRODUCTION TO ORGANISMS

This course provides an introduction to the science of Biology, with emphasis on organismal biology and unifying themes. The course deals with evolution, the diversity of life, form and function, and ecology. Part of the laboratory component involves training in dissection techniques.

HOURS OF CREDIT: Three hours lecture, three hours laboratory a week



BIOLOGY 331 COMMUNICATIONS IN BIOLOGY

This course is an introduction to the basic principles of scientific communication. Lectures and assignments will focus on the analysis, interpretation and presentation of biological data, and on the preparation of scientific papers and reports. Students will critically evaluate scientific papers in their areas of interest, and gain experience presenting scientific information to their peers (both orally and as posters).

PREREQUISITE: at least 12 semester hours of core biology courses
HOURS OF CREDIT: Three hours lecture/seminar and up to 3 hours tutorial per week.



BIOLOGY 341 - THE BIOLOGY OF INSECTS (OFFERED IN FALL 2008 AND ALTERNATE YEARS)

This course is an introduction to Entomology. Topics include insect classification, anatomy, development, ecology and behaviour, and the importance of insects to people. Laboratory sessions focus on insect morphology and taxonomy.

PREREQUISITE: Biology 204
HOURS OF CREDIT: Three hours lecture and three hours laboratory per week

BIOLOGY 462 - LIMNOLOGY (FRESHWATER ECOSYSTEMS) (OFFERED IN FALL 2007 AND ALTERNATE YEARS)

The focus of this course is freshwater habitats, particularly those found on Prince Edward Island. Study concentrates on the physical, chemical, and biological characteristics of fresh waters, classification of freshwater habitats, and applied limnology. The laboratory/field component includes an introduction to water analysis techniques and field equipment, field water analysis of three habitats (river, pond, wetland), the collection and analysis of biological samples, and the physical properties of water.

PREREQUISITE: Biology 204 and 222
HOURS OF CREDIT: Three hours lecture and three hours laboratory per week



BIOLOGY 490 HONOURS RESEARCH AND THESIS

This is a 12 semester hour course required of all Honours students. It is intended to provide the student with an opportunity to design, carry out, evaluate, and write up a research project in an approved scientific fashion, while working under the direction of a chief advisor assisted by an advisory committee. Normally the research will be done during the summer session immediately preceding the student's graduating year, and the thesis written during the final academic year. The objective of this course is to provide research experience for the student who intends to take up further studies at a post-graduate level or for the student who is planning on entering a career where research experience in Biology or related areas would be an asset.



BIOLOGY 881 - APPLIED BIOSTATISTICS

This course is designed to provide a background in basic applied statistics. Topics will include uses, assumptions, and interpretation of univariate and bivariate parametric and nonparametric tests, with practise on setting up data matrices on different statistical computer packages. Multivariate techniques will be introduced, with practise in the specialized techniques relating to the students' particular field of study. PREREQUISITE: admission to a graduate programme in Science and at least one introductory statistics course. HOURS OF CREDIT: Three.
