Foundations Stream

We are pleased to announce that a Foundations Stream will be introduced at this year’s Atlantic Summer Institute on Healthy and Safe Communities!

The purpose of the Foundations Stream is to help participants learn more about the common ground between health promotion, community safety, and social development. In a series of four interactive workshops, one in each block of concurrent workshop sessions, participants will become more familiar with fundamental concepts and vocabulary, tools and models, skills and strategies that will enhance shared learning at the Institute and support professional and community collaboration to create healthier and safer communities.

The Foundations Stream is for anyone who wants a deeper understanding of the fundamentals of healthy and safe communities. This includes first time attendees and those who want a refresher on the links between health promotion and crime prevention through social developments.

Workshop 1 – Introduction: Foundational Stream
Workshop 2 – Models That Promote Positive Values and Holistic Approaches
Workshop 3 – Developing Empathic Leadership
Workshop 4 – Working Together for Healthier and Safer Communities

“Race, Violence and Health”

We are pleased to announce that Dr. Wanda Thomas Bernard has agreed to deliver the keynote address entitled “Race, Violence and Health”, for the 2006 Atlantic Summer Institute on Healthy and Safe Communities.

Dr. Thomas Bernard is an Associate Professor and the Director of the School of Social Work at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Thomas Bernard’s research with Black men and the violence of racism, particularly in the criminal justice system, has had significant impact on not only academic work but also agency and community-based practice. She has made major academic and professional contributions to the field of Black masculinity, to the investigation of Black women's health and well being, and to an Africentric understanding of the strengths of Black families, including Black men's experience of mothering and ‘other’ mothering.

A number of Thomas Bernard’s accomplishments include:

  • providing leadership in developing culturally-relevant services and culturally- specific programs in the health profession
  • being instrumental in the development of community-based research teams in her field and documenting the challenges of participatory action research
  • participating in the innovative, multi-media dissemination of research findings focusing on media representations of African Canadians and domestic violence in the Black community.

Dr. Bernard’s multitude of invited presentations, keynote addresses, professional development workshops, and community outreach activities provide concrete evidence of her dedication to educating others about the need for further investigation into African Canadians' health and well-being.
