David Chavis, President of the Association for the Study and Development of Community, is known worldwide for his work in the implementation, support, and evaluation of community initiatives and has received a distinguished career award from the American Psychological Association. The main focus of Dr. Chavis’s work has been the use of community development to prevent poverty, violence, substance abuse, illness and other social problems. Dr. Chavis has led the review of wide-ranging substance abuse and community development initiatives. This work, at the national and local levels, has involved the White House Office for National Drug Control Policy, the US Department of Justice, the US Center for Substance Abuse Prevention, the National Crime Prevention Council, the National Cancer Institute, The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and others.
Dr. Chavis has been key to community development strategies for foundations, government agencies, and non-profit organizations.
He is currently responsible for management and strategy for a comprehensive community program in Battle Creek Michigan sponsored by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. Yes we can! is a neighborhood-based approach to community improvement through educational achievement and economic self-sufficiency.
