WHAT IS THE ATLANTIC SUMMER INSTITUTE ON HEALTHY & SAFE COMMUNITIES?
The Atlantic Summer Institute is a learning institute that brings people together working in economic and social development, justice, crime, disease and injury prevention, and health promotion. It has been held annually since 2004 at the University of Prince Edward Island in Charlottetown, PEI.
The purpose of the ASI is to make the links between crime prevention, social and economic development and health promotion among the many people and sectors that are working toward creating safer and healthier communities in Atlantic Canada.
The Institute looks beyond simply creating programs and services and examines the underlying issues that affect the health and safety of a community, such as employment/working conditions, physical environment, social support networks, education, personal health and coping skills, healthy child development, gender and culture, income and social status.
The Atlantic Summer Institute on Healthy & Safe Communities is an opportunity to begin collaboration across sectors in a real and meaningful way, ultimately leading to the creation of healthier and safer communities in Atlantic Canada and beyond.
