THE  DEPARTMENT  OF  BIOMEDICAL  SCIENCES

The Department of Biomedical Sciences, Atlantic Veterinary College, University of Prince Edward Island, provides professional contributions in teaching, basic and applied research, diagnostic service, and limited elements of continuing education. Each of these functions may be addressed within one or more of the Department's five operational areas, which include Macroscopic and Microscopic Anatomy, Physiology, Pharmacology, and Toxicology. Although the Department focuses upon the pre-clinical curriculum and basic research, faculty and staff also maintain a philosophy of full partnership in the veterinary medical mission of the College. The Department is, therefore, committed to active and growing roles in collaborative clinical research , consultation and continuing education in areas of expertise, and diagnostic services in toxicology and applied analytical chemistry. The Department also encourages interdisciplinary research in areas of common strength and in fields that relate to the strategic mission of the College (eg. Fish Health).

In the professional (DVM) curriculum, the Department presents fifteen courses and two elective rotations annually. Nine of these occur in first year, four in second year, one in third year, one in fourth year, and  faculty contribute to two additional elective rotations in the fourth year.   In addition, the Department also offers three courses in the School of Nursing on an annual basis. Moreover, the Department offers twenty-one courses within the graduate program according to demand; most of these are presented biannually. Details of these contributions are described below. In general terms the department's instructional aims are:

  1. To prepare and provide comprehensive instructional programs at both undergraduate and graduate levels. These programs are conducted primarily, but not exclusively, within the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine.

  2.
  3. To promote enhancement of teaching and the development of life-long learning skills through the exploration and validation of innovative methods of instruction.

  4.
  5. To develop and implement competitive programs in basic and applied research that are recognized and respected by external colleagues within respective disciplines (including human medical research), extramural funding agencies, and appropriate national and international scientific organizations.

  6.
  7. To prepare and provide instructional programs for professional, governmental, industrial, and commodity groups requiring continuing education in areas addressed by Departmental expertise.
