Information for Industry

Technology transfer involves the transfer of research discoveries, designs, code and/or inventions from the university to the commercial sector. Research results often best serve society when they reach the public sector. Universities generate knowledge and technologies that can be put to use in practical application by companies.

SPONSORED RESEARCH

The University of Prince Edward Island has a dynamic research environment, focused on research excellence and is experiencing remarkable growth in research capacity, intensity, and success. Our researchers are active in a variety of disciplines. Partnerships with other universities, government, and industry are helping UPEI researchers to have an impact.

A company can reap multiple benefits from directly funding a University research project in a selected area:

  • The company is given priority access to technologies that result from the research
  • Direct and rapid access to experts, specific expertise, key opinion leaders, and a wide range of cutting edge equipment
  • The formation of productive relationships with faculty members that have expertise related to the company’s research interests
  • Federal R&D tax credits can be obtained by Canadian companies that sponsor research projects at universities
  • State-of–the-art research facilities

PARTNERSHIPS AND OTHER RESEARCH AGREEMENTS

Partnership programs may involve more than a single sponsor from industry or government. They are usually referred to as university-industry, university-government or university-industry-government collaborative agreements.

Since the arrangements differ from unrestricted grants, the Technology Transfer Office (TTO) is often involved in structuring the agreements. Some examples of such partnership programs include:
