In Technology Transfer we work directly with UPEI researchers to identify, evaluate, protect and commercialize the intellectual property which results from research.
We promote the commercialization of UPEI research innovations by fostering the relationships with industry which may lead to the creation of business opportunities. These opportunities are realized in many ways including sponsored research contracts which support the existing research programs of UPEI researchers and licensing of Intellectual Property for products and services that put the knowledge created at UPEI into use.
It is our mission in Technology Transfer to work with interested researchers so the results of research undertaken at UPEI may be used for both the economic and social benefit of the researcher, the University, and society.
Under an agreement with Three Oaks Innovations, Inc, UPEI employs the expertise of that organization to advance technology transfer.
We work with the UPEI research community to:
- protect the IP generated by UPEI researchers, through a variety of approaches, including patenting, copyright and trademark;
- identify sources of funding, both from government and industry, which can help advance research with commercial potential;
- promote and market the opportunities for technology transfer to potential industry partners;
- negotiate licenses with industry or faculty start-ups, for inventions which arise from UPEI research;
- provide information to researchers on technology transfer and the commercialization process;
- assist researchers in recognizing the commercial potential of their research;
- foster a culture of innovation for UPEI faculty, staff and students;
- create strong relationships between the UPEI research community and business, government and NGO’s which translate knowledge to useful products, policies and services.
