| Description: | Awarded to a full- or part-time graduate student at AVC, and renewable for one year depending on satisfactory progress. Candidates must meet UPEI graduate admissions criteria; identify a prospective graduate supervisor; must be admitted to a Master's or PhD program at AVC within 12 months of qualifying for the Award; and must not be receiving other graduate awards in excess of $20,000. |
| Background: | This scholarship was established by friends of the Atlantic Veterinary College and UPEI, Art & Jean Fitzgeraldwho are residents of Springbrook, PEI and St. Louis, Missouri. A native of Sydney, Cape Breton, Art Fitzgerald has a BA in Mechanical Engineering from Dalhousie Universityand an MBA from York University. In almost three decades with Monsanto he held numerous positions, frommarketer to director of quality control to Chief Operating Officer of the Nutrition Products Group. Befo reretiring in 2001, he was Co-CEO of Renessen, a biotechnology joint venture between Monsanto and Cargill,developing new grains and oilseeds. In the community, Art has been a board member of the Animal HealthInstitute and Chairman and board member of St. Joseph Institute for the Deaf in St. Louis, Missouri. Jean Fitzgerald was born in Halifax, NS. Her father was a native of Charlottetown, PEI and her mother fromEngland. Jean is a graduate of Mount St. Vincent University in Halifax and worked as a teacher in Nova Scotiaand Ontario. Her extensive involvement with her community includes being a volunteer and fundraiser for St.Joseph Institute for the Deaf in St. Louis, Missouri. |
