| Background: | This annual award was established by Dr. Margaret F. Munro. Dr. Munro was involved with the creation of theUPEI School of Nursing beginning in 1990 when she was seconded from the Faculty of Nursing at the Universityof Calgary to develop the nursing program at the University of Prince Edward Island. In 1991, Dr. Munro wasinvited to become the Founding Dean of the new UPEI School of Nursing and remained in that position until July1997 when she retired. The curriculum of this school was the first in Canada to be developed based directly on the principals ofprimary health care. Within the program, UPEI School of Nursing maintained the goal of preparing graduates topractice nursing from those principals and also to give leadership in primary health care through their ownprofessional nursing practice. |
