Description: Awarded to a Nursing student who, in the opinion of the Nursing faculty, demonstrates leadership and mentorship qualities.
Background: Louise Brown (1914-2007) was born in Rollo Bay, PEI. She graduated from PWC in 1931 with a teaching Certificate and taught school on PEI until she entered nursing at St Martha's Hospital in Antigonish in 1936. After graduation in 1939 she worked as Head Nurse in the operating room at St. Martha's until joining the Royal Canadian Air Force as a nursing sister in December 1940. She served as an Operating Room Nurse in Canadian hospitals in Dartmouth, Goose Bay and Bagotville before being posted overseas to North Allerton, England in 1944. After the war she married, had 5 children and resumed her nursing career in Charlottetown. Louise became the evening Supervisor at the PEI Hospital, a position she held for many years. It was in her role as supervisor where she combined her teaching and nursing knowledge to mentor many young nurses and gain the respect of her peers. Louise was a strong nursing leader and exemplified this through her intellect and professionalism. She retired from the QEH in 1983 after 44 years of nursing but continued to contribute by volunteering at the hospital for another 20 years.
