Ledwell-Duffy Memorial Award in Philosophy

Description: Awarded to the Philosophy student entering fourth year who has the highest standing overall in Philosophy.
Background: This scholarship was established at the University of Prince Edward Island by Frank and Carolyn (Duffy) Ledwell in memory of their parents, Annie and Earl Duffy and Tom and Anna Ledwell. Annie Duffy attended Prince of Wales College and graduated with a teacher's license in 1928. She taught in Newtown Cross and Kinkora, and spent her life teaching children of all grade levels. While raising 12 children and helping Earl run the farm, Annie contributed many hours to community organizations. She passed away in August 2000. Earl Duffy was born in 1892. He enlisted in the first Canadian Tank Battalion in 1915 and served in England and France. He was a potato farmer, a school board trustee and a board member of the butter and cheese factory organizations in Kinkora, PEI, for over 30 years. He passed away in July 1974. Tom and Anna Ledwell married and lived in St.Peter's, PEI, where they lived and raised a family of seven children. Tom had served with the Second Seige Battery, Artillery, in World War 1 and was decorated with the Military Medal for bravery in the field. A lifelong reader, he read through the whole Encyclopedia Britannica. Anna had of a variety of creative skills: seamstress, quilter, needle worker, pianist, and superb cook. Tom died in 1973 at the age of 86; Anna, in 1991, at the age of 93. Five of their c hildren had University and Graduate degrees.
