The Jewell Family "Peggy" Award
Faculty: DVM
Occasion: Convocation
Process: Selected by AVC Awards Committee
Scholarship Type: Award
Description: Granted on an annual basis to a student graduating from the DVM program at the Atlantic Veterinary College who has a demonstrated interest in large animal practice and dairy herd health and has shown extraordinary care and compassion for large animals.
Background: Kevin and Cheryl Jewell are no strangers to the Atlantic Veterinary College. They have volunteered their time and energy to many initiatives and are known for their incredible care and treatment of animals on their dairy farm. They have welcomed fourth year vet students to their farm and assisted in their education through offering their farming operation as a learning hub. The Jewell Farm, a third generation dairy and cash crop operation, prides itself in all members of the farm family participating in the day to day decisions that need to be made to remain current to produce high quality food for consumers. They believe paying attention to details provides their livestock and crops with the best possible living environments for not only the animals but the people working within the farming operation. A combination of happy cows and happy people are essential to a successful business. The Jewell Family has invested in the future of the families involved by completing a major expansion in 2009 to accommodate Kevin and Cheryl’s children to carry out their passion for agriculture. Investing in the future and fulfilling their children’s dreams is gratifying for Kevin and Cheryl. The Jewell family has supported AVC and its students for decades. Their contribution has been significant and this gift to endow an award is deeply appreciated by the university and its veterinary faculty, staff, and students. The Jewells have named this award after a particular cow, Peggy. That is the nickname they gave her after she suffered a broken leg during a difficult birth. She went on to be a foundational member of their herd. The Jewell's feel she wouldn't have survived without the excellent care she received at AVC.
