Background: From the first day of his teaching career, forty years ago, Don MacEwen has always cared deeply for every student who walked through his door. His incredible passion for the profession of Engineering coupled with his unwavering dedication to the success of his students has earned him notable recognition from peers and pupils alike. It has also made him one of the most beloved professors at UPEI. A proud UPEI Alumni with a deep love for Prince Edward Island, Don was one of the first students to complete his Diploma of Engineering at UPEI in 1972. He continued his education at UNB earning a Bachelor of Engineering (Civil) and a Masters of Engineering (Environmental) before returning to UPEI in 1977 to begin his teaching career. During his tenure at UPEI Don played a key role in Canadian Engineering and has served presidential terms for both the Canadian Council for Professional Engineers and the Association of Professional Engineers of Prince Edward Island. In 1988-89 he helped the CCPE develop a nationally acepted definition of professional engineering, a national code of ethics, a national guideline for professional engineering practice and a national guideline on the qualifications required for admittance into the profession. It was Don who was largely responsible for introducing the first Professional Practice Exam as a requirement for licensure as a professional engineer in PEI and initiated the first written history of the APEPEI. His many accomplishments also include helping to establish the Canadian Engineering Qualifications Board, developing a course on Professional Ethics, and driving the creation of a provincial science fair for students in Grades 4-12, which now involves thousands and promotes engineering as a potential career choice to young students. His exemplary career has garnered much recognition including a Medal of Distinction in Engineering Education from the Canadian Council of Engineering and the Ralph L. Woodside, P.Eng. Memorial Award for outstanding service to the profession from the APEPEI, but the title which remains most meaningful to him has always been “professor”. Professor MacEwen has devoted himself to working with his students and has “attempted to show them the wonderful things that engineering achieves beyond the nuts and bolts”. The impact of his guidance is still felt by UPEI Engineering Alumni who treasure many fond memories of the man who inspired them to become engineers. In recognition of his retirement in 2017 and in appreciation for his 40 years of leadership in the Department of Engineering, UPEI is proud to create an award in honour of Professor Don MacEwen. Criteria: Beginning in academic 2016/2017 one award will be presented to a student graduating from the Bachelor of Science in Sustainable Design Engineering who is an inspiration to classmates. The recipient demonstrates academic excellence and exceptional engagement in project-based design; and, has shown the highest ethical standards as demonstrated by Professor MacEwen over his many years of outstanding teaching and engineering practice.
