Academic Accommodation and Supports for Students

What is academic accommodation?

Academic accommodation relates to the student’s learning and evaluation in an academic program or particular class. Non-academic accommodation relates to university activities and services that are not otherwise considered an academic accommodation.

Requests for academic accommodation relating to classroom participation and class evaluation should be made prior to each academic term so that accommodations can be put in place when needed.

Students are responsible for requesting accommodations as early as possible in the semester, preferably prior to the academic term.

For more information please contact, Student Affairs at 902-566-0488.

How to Register and Required documentation

If this is your first time requesting accommodations, you must make an appointment with the Coordinator of Accessibility Services. You may be required to provide documentation of your learning disability in the form of a psycho-educational assessment. Furthermore, students with a psychological, neurological, physical or attentional disability will require their medical professional to complete a medical verification form to identify the impact these barriers have on their learning.

Students will discuss how the reason for their request is impacting their academic experience at the university. Recommendations will be developed and an accommodation plan will be kept on file. Accommodation plans are reviewed with students each semester.

All information about a student's disability related barriers is kept confidential and in accordance with the Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act, other privacy legislation to which the University is subject and University policies. However, the University needs sufficient information to reasonably evaluate and respond to a student's request for Accommodation.

Scheduling tests, quizzes and exams

In order to access exam accommodations, students must register with Accessibility Services at the beginning of each semester.

Schedule your midterm and final exams with Accessibility Services using the online scheduling portal AccessDeck. Please book at the beginning of each semester to ensure that a room and a proctor are assigned.

  • Tests and midterms must be booked at least one week in advance.
  • Final exams must be booked two weeks prior to the first day of the final exam session.

If you have any questions regarding exam accommodations, please contact Lori Cummings at (902) 894-2825.
