Be part of UPEI's Diversity Week! Sign up for Diversity Trivia at the Wave (individually or by team) on January 20 or for the Faculty/student Sound-Off January 22! To register, contact Ruth at (902) 628-4332 or rfreeman@upei.ca.
UPEI celebrates its second annual Diversity Week January 18-22, and everyone is invited to take in the events, which are open to the public and free of charge. Diversity Week is a commitment to recognizing and appreciating characteristics — both visible and invisible — that make individuals unique, in an atmosphere that promotes and celebrates individual and collective achievement, support, education, and inclusion.
Kicking off the celebration is an opening ceremony at noontime January 18, with cake and hot chocolate in McMillan Hall in the W. A. Murphy Student Centre. That evening, a panel discussion with Ann Braithwaite (Women’s Studies), Pamela Courtney-Hall (Philosophy), and Charles Adeyanju (Sociology/Anthropology), moderated by Peter Koritansky (Religious Studies), asks the question: “Can We Ever Really Be Equal?” Capping off the week on Friday evening is a free performance at McMillan Hall by Moccasin Joe, the alter ego of Aboriginal comedian Leonard Dick of Northern Ontario. Moccasin Joe is a fictional stereotypical Indian character who addresses issues of diversity through joy and the healing power of laughter. The event is sponsored by the Native Council of PEI, Aboriginal Women’s Association of PEI, and UPEI’s Department of Student Services. Donations for Chief Mary Bernard Memorial Women’s Shelter in Lennox Island and Grandmother’s House will be gratefully accepted at the door.
The week also features an international pavilion featuring UPEI’s international students and a “dips of the world” tasting session, Diversity Trivia, the Eagle Island Singers, a student/faculty “sound-off,” and drumming during half-time at the Panther basketball game against UNB January 22.
Check upei.ca/do for the full schedule. All events are open to the public and are free of charge. For more information, please contact Ruth at (902) 628-4332 or rfreeman@upei.ca.

We're pleased to announce that the AAU has selected UPEI as the site of the Fall 2010 AAU Teaching Showcase. The tentative theme is "The Senior Year and Other Transitions," but we'd like help working through ideas for the day. We also need volunteers to help with the organization, but coming to the brainstorming session is not a commitment to work on the conference -- we promise! If you're interested, but can't make the time, please contact Shannon Murray (smurray@upei.ca).
