Career Exploration

Make sure you know what the educational requirements are for the careers you are considering. Some people think choosing a major and choosing a career are the same thing, when often they are not. Some majors can prepare you for a variety of careers and some majors are career-specific. A career- specific major results in a professional degree, which is tailored for a known career direction. However, even with a professional degree there is the opportunity to further tailor and specialize in an area of interest.

The following information will help you pick and choose a career in your given major:

Bachelor of Arts

Bachelor of Science

Bachelor of Business Administration

When choosing a major consider:

  • What prerequisites are required?
  • What core courses are required to complete this major?
  • How many courses are required to complete this major?

Steps to help you choose a major:

  • Decide what you want to choose first, your major or your career.
  • Evaluate your academic strengths and weaknesses.
  • Take a look at all the majors your university offers, and begin by eliminating any of the majors you KNOW you are not interested in pursuing.
  • Gather information about the major from the university calendar or a specific department.
  • Make sure you know what the educational requirements are for the careers or graduate programs you are considering.
  • Ask questions. The more you know, the more informed you'll be when making your decision.
  • Remember you can change your mind; most university students will change their major at least once!
