Are you interested in building your skills for community action?
The ASI is offering three Curriculum Pathways in 2010:
1. Foundations: Preparing to work together across sectors and cultures
2. Application: Advancing learning in a case study approach to planning
3. Specialization: Strengthening community action on health and safety
Curriculum is defined as a pathway for learning designed to meet stated outcomes through activities and materials. The curriculum is integrated throughout the program in three pathways with four workshops within each pathway. Each pathway is a series of four comprehensive and interactive workshops. Interactive sessions provide opportunities for participants to expand their networks and consolidate partnerships for action.
You can select one pathway when you register. The ASI provides a Certificate of Participation for completion of each of the three learning pathways. This may serve as a continuing education credit in some work settings. Please note: The Foundations Pathway is a pre-requisite for the other two pathways.

Attending the Atlantic Summer Institute on Healthy and Safe Communities this year? Then please bring your children! It's free for them!
We are pleased to announce that we will once again be offering a Children's Program at the 2010 Atlantic Summer Institute. The Children's Program will parallel that of the adults in that they will learn what it takes to make a community healthy, safe, and resilient.
The Institute believes in inclusion and reducing barriers to participation. We want everyone to get involved with the Institute, so there will be a free, educational and fun program offered to children of registered participants (3-day registration).
The program is designed for children ages 3-14 and is staffed by early childhood educators and / or qualified teachers. Instruction will be available in both official languages.
Activities offered include the sharing of a story by local author Deirdre Kessler, the chance to watch the famous annual Gold Cup and Saucer Parade, and kite-making with PEI artist Maurice Bernard.
AND . . . for 2010 the Atlantic Summer Institute is pleased to announce a partnership with the Confederation Centre of the Arts in Charlottetown, PEI!
This year the children will have a wonderful opportunity to learn about the magic of theatre! Working with the talented Young Company actors and actresses, the children will get to observe and participate in theatre warm-up exercises, watch the Young Company perform outdoors at the Confederation Centre, mix and mingle with the actors, and prepare a musical selection for presentation on the last day of the Institute.
To view the preliminary children's program, please visit our website at http://www.upei.ca/si/ and follow the links for the Children's Program.

See the description below for another exciting pre-Institute activity to be held Tuesday, August 17th, 2010!
The Public Health Agency of Canada's Canadian Best Practices Portal (CBPP) is a virtual front door to community and population health interventions related to chronic disease prevention and health promotion. These interventions have been evaluated, shown to be successful, and have the potential to be adapted and replicated by practitioners working in similar fields. The Portal is intended to enhance public health decisions using the best available evidence. This orientation will provide participants with a general overview to the Portal (http://cbpp-pcpe.phac-aspc.gc.ca), including its development, format and content. The presentation will also review how interventions and resources are selected for the Portal and how to nominate your own "best" practices.
The ASI "Portal training" will be held from 2 to 4 the afternoon of August 17th. Space is limited.
For more information on the Atlantic Summer Institute, please explore the website www.upei.ca/si.

A new one-day Foundations Pathway workshop will be offered on August 17, prior to the official opening of the ASI. The Foundations Pathway explores frameworks and models for healthy and safe communities. Economic factors, physical and social environments, education, and early childhood development are considered. Research, policy and practice are used to better understand concepts and strategies and to encourage partnering on complex issues and valuing diversity. The Circle of Health© and Aboriginal Medicine Wheel are used to guide discussion and discovery.
This pre-Institute workshop was tested in five communities in 2008. Participants who complete the workshop and workbook will receive a Certificate of Participation at the Foundations level. With a certificate, one can enter the Application Pathway or Specialization Pathway.
This workshop is for those who want a one-day learning event. It is also for those who want to complete the Foundations Pathway and prepare to enter the Application or Specialization Pathway during ASI 2010.
Please note: The Foundations Pathway is a pre-requisite for the other two pathways.

What are the obstacles to creating healthy and vibrant communities? What are some "bounce back" strategies? What strengths do we find in communities to "bounce forward" in a dynamic movement for social justice, community peace, and creative living with one another and in harmony with the planet?
These are some of the questions Marie Burge will ask (and maybe begin to answer) in this engaging plenary presentation at the Atlantic Summer Institute in August.
Marie Burge has been a staff person and a member of the Cooper Institute Collective for the past 25 years. She has thirty-eight years experience in community education and development and participatory action research both in developing countries and in Canada, mainly PEI. Click here to learn more about Marie and her plenary address: http://www.upei.ca/si/ si2010/en/plenary.
If you are interested in what Marie has to say, then come to the Institute August 17th-20th, 2010 in Charlottetown, PEI -- you may be surprised at how much is going on right here in Atlantic Canada! Q. What does it take to ensure that this competence is maintained in difficult circumstances and increased when conditions are more favourable?
Hint: institutions, organizations and individuals all have roles to play…..and what has any of this to do with health and safety?
William Ninacs will be answering these questions and more at this year’s Institute.
