"The Competent Community: Resilient and Empowered"

Bill Ninacs is a consultant, researcher and trainer in the fields of community development, community economic development, and the social economy, currently working out of a worker co-operative in Victoriaville, Québec (Canada), that he chairs.  His Ph.D. dissertation was on the types and processes of empowerment in CED initiatives in Québec.  For a number of years, Bill chaired the CED training institute based in Montréal, and also helped found the Québec Council on Social Development.  He is currently a member of the Board of Overseers of Southern New Hampshire University’s School of CED. 


As a person with multiple disabilities, Bill has also been involved in numerous social movements concerned with the rights of physically challenged individuals.

 

Description of Presentation

What makes a community competent?  What does it take to ensure that this competence is maintained in difficult circumstances and increased when conditions are more favourable?  Hint:  institutions, organizations and individuals all have roles to play.  And what has any of this to do with health and safety?
