Plenary Speaker

The Jury is out. There is a link between literacy and children’s wellness.

But what are those connections and how do they work?
Should we market literacy programming as crime prevention and intervention?
And how do we promote literacy among the most at risk populations? These are some of the questions Robert Wright will ask (and maybe begin to answer) in this engaging plenary presentation at the Atlantic Summer Institute in August.

Robert Wright is the Executive Director of the Child and Youth Strategy of the Province of Nova Scotia. To find out more about his background, click here http://www.upei.ca/si/files/si/2008_Plenary2_RobertWright_EN.pdf.

If you are interested in what Robert has to say then come to the Institute, August 19-22, 2008 in Charlottetown, PEI, you may be surprised at how much is going on, right here in Atlantic Canada! For more information on the Atlantic Summer Institute and to register, please go online to www.upei.ca/SI. For inquiries please contact asi@thequaich.pe.ca or (902) 894.3399

The Atlantic Summer Institute on Healthy and Safe Communities would like to announce and welcome our Keynote Speaker for the 2008 Institute; Victorin Boudreau from Pointe-Verte in New Brunswick.

Reflecting this year’s theme of Literacy, Victorin will be coming to Charlottetown to share his own personal journey of literacy, learning and determination. This keynote address will take place on Tuesday August 19, 2008 and will help to set the tone for the four days of Institute learning. This keynote address will be presented in French with simultaneous translation.

Here is an excerpt from Victorin’s story…

Victorin left school at the age of 16. All his life without education has been a real nightmare. He could not read and write to anyone. It made him very unhappy and he found it very difficult, even shameful. It was at age 55 that he has decided to return to school because several jobs rejected him because he had no education. He enrolled in a school recovery program in its region, the Alpha program Petit-Rocher, in 2003. A new door has opened for him. Since that time, he is very persistent and determined to go through...
