
The Atlantic Summer Institute on Healthy and Safe Communities is calling for presentations that profile innovative and interesting practices and programs and address an aspect of literacy, health, safety or crime in Atlantic Canada and beyond. The deadline for receipt of presentations has been extended to Monday, May 5, 2008.
The theme for the 2008 Atlantic Summer Institute is Reading Between the Lines: Health, Safety and Literacy.
Presentations will be featured during the “Atlantic Canada Showcase” to be held on Thursday August 21st, 2008 as part of the Atlantic Summer Institute in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. We will give priority to proposals from Atlantic Canada but we also encourage others to submit ideas.

This call is for either Interactive or Posterboard presentations that profile promising practices, programs, policies, experiences or lessons learned that relate to the theme of literacy and connect it with health, safety or crime - the focus of the Institute.
Interactive Presentations
Interactive Presentations will be delivered on the afternoon of Thursday, August 21, 2008. Each session will be 45 minutes in length: delivered twice, each time to a different audience. There will be 20 minutes for presenting, followed by 25 minutes for engaging participants. Presentations must include substantial interaction with the participants.
Posterboard Presentations
Posterboard Presentations will give a visual presentation of your research or work. You can illustrate your display with graphs, photos, diagrams, and a small amount of text on the poster board. You should be in attendance at your Posterboard during your designated poster session time. We encourage you to hold discussions with the participants who will be circulating among the poster boards.
You will be asked to complete a template that will include:
a description on your presentation
what others will learn from your presentation
a short biography
your contact information
helpful hint : try writing your presentation description in a Word or Wordperfect document, then cut and paste it into the template.
We will send you an automated acknowledgement of receipt when you submit your presentation summary. All summaries will be reviewed by the program committee of the Atlantic Summer Institute. We will notify you if your application is successful.
We are accepting abstracts until Monday, May 5, 2008, 12:00PM (Atlantic Time). We will not accept late submissions.
Submission of a summary implies that you agree to register for the institute and make this presentation as scheduled. If we accept your presentation, your registration fee will be waived. You will only need to cover the costs of accommodations and travel. Meals are included as part of the waived registration fee.
