Welcome to the department of mathematics and statistics at the University of Prince Edward Island. We encourage you to learn more about our community of dynamic faculty dedicated to their research and to communicating their enthusiasm for mathematics and statistics to our students.
Many of our faculty are award-winning teachers who value the opportunity to teach our students in a small-class environment—often less than 20 students per class in some of our upper-level courses. This environment is fantastic for our students who are able to interact with peers and faculty on a one-on-one basis. All our faculty members are active in research, with the majority holding external research grants. This passion for research is reflected in our teaching and provides many of our students the opportunity to become involved with exciting research. Some recent examples of research projects carried out by our students include image compression using fractals; examination of nilpotent matrices; investigations in game theory and graph theory; and classification of high-dimensional data—the list goes on!
While many of our students go on to pursue graduate studies at other excellent universities across Canada (Waterloo, Alberta, Carleton, Toronto, British Columbia, and Victoria, to name a few), and have received prestigious scholarships to do so, just as many students graduate to pursue a wide variety of other careers, including teaching, medicine, risk management, financial mathematics, engineering, and statistics.
