Description: Awarded to a mature female student entering third or fourth year in any faculty, who has returned to university studies in a full-time capacity. In the event of equally qualified candidates, financial need will be the determining factor. Students already in receipt of $1,000 or more in the same academic year are not eligible.
Background: The Michael and Aletha Hennessey Scholarships were established in honour of Michael and Aletha Hennessey of Charlottetown, PEI. Michael F. Hennessey (SDU '50) was the University of Prince Edward Island's first Registrar who helped draft the university constitution when St. Dunstan's University merged with Prince of Wales College to form UPEI. He was recognized as a UPEI Founder in 2004. In his retirement years, Mr. Hennessey is an author and award-winning playwright and is a past recipient of the PEI Council of the Arts prestigious Award for Distinguished Contribution to the Literary Arts on PEI. Aletha Hennessey worked at the University Library from 1968-1976. She also worked with the Heritage Foundation, the Charlottetown Area Development Corporation, and Workers Compensation Board. She is also a volunteer with various community organizations, including Meals on Wheels and the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. Their children, Kathleen Garrett, Maureen Hennessey, Frank Hennessey, Sean Hennessey, and Patrick Hennessey established these scholarships in honour of their parents.
