Baron Pound Award
Maximum Amount: $1,500.00
Faculty: DVM
Status:
Current 4th Year
Scholarship Type: Award
Description: Awarded to a graduating student in Veterinary Medicine who has demonstrated extraordinary compassion, outstanding communication skills, and deep respect for the human-companion animal bond while caring for a critically ill animal.
Background: This award was initiated by Brian Sherry Pound in memory of their beloved companion, Baron. In October 2003, the Pounds' pet dog, Baron, was diagnosed with lymphosarcoma and referred to the Atlantic Veterinary College for further tests and treatment. Over the course of three months, staff at the College's Veterinary Teaching Hospital worked hard to provide Baron with the best quality of life while ensuring members of his family received on-going communication and compassion. Although having gone through the tragedy of losing Baron, the Pound family feels very fortunate to have experienced the caring and compassion of those at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital who have chosen veterinary medicine as their field's work. The Pounds continue to be grateful for the daily phone calls that were made to them by a fourth year student to provide updates on Baron's care and to share special moments. The knowledge that Baron received such loving care continues to be source of comfort to the Pounds. To recognize the care Baron received while a patient at AVC and the compassion exhibited to their family, the Pound family has established The Baron Pound Award.
