Background: Sister Avelina Smith, 1916-2000, was a Sister of St. Martha of Prince Edward Island. She received her R.N. in 1940 from the Charlottetown Hospital School of Nursing and worked on staff there until 1945. She then became one of the pioneer group, which undertook the enormous task of transforming the former Albion Hotel of Alberton into the Western Hospital, the first general hospital for West Prince, PEI. Later she became supervisor on the surgical floor of the Charlottetown Hospital. In 1971, Sister Avelina became a lecturer at the Charlottetown Hospital School of Nursing and at the P.E.I. School of Nursing, a position she held until her retirement in 1981. Sister Avelina had a great zest for life, and a love of people of every age and every need. She loved music and was a joyous member of the Island Fiddlers. In her retirement years she enjoyed many hobbies: swimming, skiing, gardening, and fishing, to name a few. She was full of energy and lived life to the full. She was active to the day she died and passed away in less than an hour after being admitted to the hospital with breathing problems. She was loved as a teacher and dearly missed by her students and the Sisters of the congregation.
