Description: Awarded to an organ student who has demonstrated a commitment to the advancement of the craft and artistry or organ-playing, and whose overall progress is deemed most meritorious based on the recommendation of the organ instructor. If there are no qualified organ students, the Award may go to a pianist.
Background: This scholarship is established at the University of Prince Edward Island by Allison and Gail Swan, owners of MacLean Funeral Home Swan Chapel, to recognize Miss Simmons' 30 years of service as the organist at the funeral home. Miss Simmons is a graduate of Prince of Wales College 1935. Miss Simmons has dedicated much of her time and many of her talents to Prince Edward Island. She worked at the Bank of Nova Scotia in Charlottetown for 32 years. In addition to playing the organ at the MacLean Funeral Home Swan Chapel, Miss Simmons also played at various churches in PEI, acted as accompanist at the PEI Music Festival for a number of years, and was an organist for many weddings. Miss Simmons is a former member of the Royal Canadian College of Organists, The Georgie Reid Barton Art Club, and the PEI Arts Society. Miss Simmons has many beautiful pictures in her home.
