Description: Awarded to a student who is a resident of PEI and has completed at least one year at UPEI and be registered as a full-time student at the University in the year in which the scholarship is to be used. The recipient must be registered in a program designed to enable him/her to work in an agriculture-related field (e.g., veterinary medicine, agricultural marketing, or soil and water conservation) and be intending to pursue that career on PEI.
Background: Elsie (Macdonald) Inman was born in West River, PEI in December 1890. She married George Inman in 1910. She was very active in the community. She helped organize Liberal women of PEI (circa 1916) elected 2nd President, she appeared before Legislature alone to battle for women's vote (circa 1920), she was nominated for Liberal candidate for Belfast in early twenties (defeated as women weren't acceptable as MLA's), and she served as Chairman of Mother's Allowance Commission of PEI. She was granted an honorary degree from the University of Prince Edward Island in 1982. Senator Inman served as the President Canadian Club in PEI, President Royal Canadian Legion, Member of the International Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, President of the Montague Hospital Auxiliary, President of the Innkeeper's Association of PEI, President of the PEI Women's Liberal Association, and member of PEI Historical Society. She was appointed Senator in July 1955. Senator Inman passed away in 1986. Senator Inman was always interested in and very knowledgeable about agricultural issues and prior to her death she established the Senator Elsie Inman Scholarship fund for a UPEI student intending to work it the agricultural industry on the Island.
