Computer Services
Computer Services provides the campus with several facilities for student use. Computers are located in Robertson Library, Kelley Building, Atlantic Veterinary College, Main Building, Memorial Building, Steel Building, KCI Chemistry Centre, Duffy Science Centre, and Cass Building.

Lost and Found
UPEI operates a Lost and Found collection, based out of the Utility/Security Building. The hours of operation are Monday to Friday, 8:00 am–4:00 pm, for claiming items. However, security is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, if you wish to report a lost item. The Lost and Found holds items for a period of 90 days. Chi-Wan Young Sports Centre
The Chi-Wan Young Canada Games Sports Centre offers students a wide variety of services. The facilities include squash and racquetball courts, a fitness center, table tennis tables, an indoor track, a multi-purpose gymnasium, soccer/rugby fields, and more. The CARI Facility, which includes the MacLauchlan Arena and aquatics facility, is also available to students.

  • Recreation
    The Athletics Department runs a wide variety of instructional programs designed to meet all the needs and interests of the University population. The Sports Centre also offers fitness classes and individual fitness consultations.
  • Intramurals
    The Athletics Department offers intramural sports leagues for volleyball, indoor soccer, basketball, hockey, and many others.

Student Services

The Department of Student Services is primarily concerned with student life and learning opportunities outside the classroom. It exists to enhance the growth and development of student wellness. It is located in the W. A. Murphy Student Centre. Student Services can be contacted by calling (902) 566-0488.

Chaplaincy
Chaplaincy provides a Christian presence supportive of students, faculty, administration, and staff. It offers counselling, opportunities for inquiry into Christian faith, and programs designed to enhance social, intellectual, and personal growth. Regular opportunities for worship are available at the Chaplaincy Centre, located north of the Duffy Science Centre (across from the Kelley Building). Counselling
Academic Students wishing to make informed decisions on such topics as course selection, choice of major, and university transfer may meet with department counsellors for assistance or advice. If a student is having difficulty concentrating or coping with academic workloads, is developing poor study habits, or is generally not being as academically successful as he/she wishes to be, counselling may enable the student to deal constructively with these issues. Information on test anxiety and time management is also available. Similar support is also available to students planning graduate work or professional study beyond the Bachelor degree level.

Career/Vocational
This counselling may include reflection on course selection or choice of major. It may involve completing an Interest Inventory, Personality Inventory, Choices Program, or the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator. Familiarization with University programs at the undergraduate or graduate
level and exploring the logistics of the job search and labour market are other areas of support. Personal Concerns such as anxiety/distress, depression, physical and/or sexual abuse, relationships, marital difficulty, alcohol/drug abuse, eating disorders, lack of focus and/or concentration, sibling or parental difficulties, lack of motivation, low self-esteem, and procrastination are examples of the types of issues counsellors may address in personal counselling. Discretion and confidentiality are ensured for those who seek assistance.

Campus Kids Day Care Centre
The UPEI Campus Kids Day Care Centre provides child-care services to UPEI students, faculty, staff, and the general public. The full-time supervisor and staff ensure that the facility functions in accordance with provincial government regulations regarding health, safety, and program standards. Registration in the Campus Kids Day Care Centre program is open to children from infant to school age. Campus Kids is located between Marian Hall and Robertson Library. Exchange Program
The University, through Student Services and the Registrar’s Office, provides students with opportunities to study in the United States and abroad. While pursuing their sophomore or junior year qualifications in another country, students pay the same tuition, room and board, and other fees as if they were studying at UPEI. A full-time student works 10 hours per week as Student Exchange Advisor. Contact Student Services at (902) 566-0674 for his/her schedule in order to obtain further information.

First-Year Advisement Centre
During the months of June, July, and August, the Department of Student Recruitment and Retention co-ordinates a First-Year Advisement Program. This orientation for incoming first-year students provides an opportunity for students to meet with a counsellor or a member of Faculty, plan their course selections, preregister, and tour the campus with senior students. Parents are invited to participate in this introduction to the University of Prince Edward Island. Graduate Testing Program
Student Services is responsible for the Graduate Testing Program at UPEI. Tests that are administered include The Graduate Record Exam, The Law School Admission Test, The Medical College Admission Test, The Graduate Management Admission Test, The Dental Aptitude Test, The Test of English as a Foreign Language, The Pharmacy College Admission Test, The Miller Analogies Test, and The Veterinary College Admission Test. Health Services
The staff of the University Health Centre contribute to the health and well-being of the students of UPEI campus. The health needs of students are met through a combination of individual appointments with a nurse or physician and health promotion/health education initiatives. International Centre
The International Centre acts as a support group for international students, helping them adjust to life at UPEI and in Canada. There is a fall orientation specifically for incoming international students, and throughout the year the International Centre plans and hosts various social events. The International Centre also provides services for those students wishing to study or work internationally, as well as for Faculty wishing to teach abroad. Learning Assistance Centre
Effective Reading Program
A six-week intensive course in Effective Reading is offered at the beginning of each academic semester. Over 1,000 students have taken advantage of this service to improve reading speed, comprehension, vocabulary, study skills, concentration, retention, and skimming and scanning abilities. The program is geared to meet a wide range of student needs—the first-year student adapting to heavy university reading requirements, the senior preparing to enter graduate school, or the student doing post-graduate work. The success rate of the students who follow the program is very high. A fee is charged for the Effective Reading Program.

Peer Tutoring
Peer tutoring in any subject is available as a supplement to assistance provided by course instructors. Student tutors are carefully selected, prepared, and supervised in order to enable them to help students master the subject matter of a course and explore new methods of independent learning. A fee is charged for tutoring service.

Liaison
The University Liaison Officer works in conjunction with the Registrar’s Office, promoting the University of Prince Edward Island to high schools throughout PEI, Canada, and abroad. This office handles requests for information and service from high-school students, teachers, parents, guidance counsellors, and principals. Resource Centre
Self-Serve Materials
The Resource Centre of the Department of Student Services maintains the following information:

  1. University Calendars at both undergraduate and graduate levels for many Canadian, American, British, European, and Australian universities;
  2. Information on graduate testing programs;
  3. Information on scholarship and other financial aid information;
  4. Audiovisual materials in support of academic skills and programs; and
  5. Employment/career resources, including material on job search techniques, the labour market, and jobs and careers abroad.

The Resource Centre is open daily Monday to Friday.

Financial Aid
Information on Student Loans, Emergency Loans, Scholarships, Bursaries, and Awards is available through the Resource Centre of Student Services. Our Financial Aid Co-ordinator, a full-time student, can provide you with applications for Student Loans, help with Student Loan appeals, and offer answers to general financial inquiries. He or she is available to provide assistance 10 hours per week. Contact Student Services for his/her schedule at 566-0674 or 566-0488.

The Student Union
The UPEI Student Union is an incorporated, non-profit organization. The Student Union’s objectives are:

  1. To represent its membership as required.
  2. To promote and direct artistic, literary, educational, social, recreational, and sporting activities at the University of Prince Edward Island.
  3. To promote unity and goodwill amongst its members.
  4. To advance the cause of higher learning in Prince Edward Island.
  5. To afford a recognized means of communication and co-operation between the students of the University of Prince Edward Island and all other bodies acting within the University and the community at large.

Services
The Student Union administers services such as the Student Medical Plan, the Student Newspaper (The Cadre), the Nexus Yearbook, New Student Orientation (NSO), co-ordination of the Student Handbook, Special & Alternative Programming, Shinerama, and Winter Carnival. The Student Union also provides services such as facsimile transmission, typing, photocopying, and laser printing for a fee.

W. A. Murphy Student Centre
The W. A. Murphy Student Centre is a focal point for students, with numerous services operating all under the same roof. Student Union offices are located in the Centre, along with a venue for live entertainment in the Courtyard. Various organizations and services are located in the Centre including:

Student Union Sub-organizations
There is a variety of sub-organizations and clubs representing social, academic, political, religious, athletic, and community interests. Examples include the Business Society, the Sociology/Anthropology Club, the History Society, and the Engineering Society. There is an official sub-organization policy determined by the UPEISU Council. All students are invited to join existing clubs or to form new ones.

The Webster Centre for Teaching and Learning
The Teaching and Learning Centre (TLC) represents a dynamic hub of integrated support services designed to enhance teaching and learning and maximize student potential for success. The present services available at the TLC include the Writing Centre, English for Academic Preparation (EAP), University 100, the Math Help Centre, Effective Reading, and the Faculty Development Office. The TLC’s usual hours of operation are 8:30 am–4:30 pm, and you are encouraged to check the TLC website for details—upei.ca/wctl or drop in to the Centre, located in the Robertson Library annex just past the Information Technology in Education Centre (ITEC).

The Writing Centre
The Writing Centre provides assistance with the writing process for students of all levels and also offers services for faculty and staff. A full-time instructor and student volunteer staff the Centre, Monday to Friday. Drop-in visits are welcome; however, it is encouraged that you call for an appointment to avoid potential delays waiting for an available staff member (the Writing Centre becomes especially busy at the end of each semester). It is important to keep in mind that the Writing Centre promotes long-term learning—the Centre does not offer a ‘quick fix’ to your writing problems, but the staff will show you how to overcome writing problems yourself. Thoughout the year, the Centre offers workshops on various writing-related topics.The Centre is also working on setting up an online scheduling system, as well as an online peer tutor—visit the Centre for more details.

Math Help Centre
Catering to students of any first-or second-year mathematics course, students can go to the Math Help Centre and receive extra help in mathematics: clarification of concepts presented in class, hints for their homework problems, test preparation, or general instruction about a particular topic. The centre is located in the old ‘Pit’ area of the Robertson Library and is part of the Teaching and Learning Centre (TLC). Its hours of operation are Sunday through Thursday, 3:00–7:00 pm. It is operated by a facilitator, with teaching assistance provided by upper-year math majors.
