Rights & Responsibilities

The issue of rights and responsibilities is very important in residence. The well-being of the residence community rests on the balance of the community’s ability to meet the needs of the individual student and vice versa. This balance is best achieved when residents are aware of their rights and responsibilities to themselves, to others, and to the community.

Each resident has the right to engage in activities that are a part of university life. These rights carry with them reciprocal responsibilities on the part of the individual to ensure these same rights for other residents. Together with the UPEI’s Student Code of Conduct, we acknowledge your rights and responsibilities while living in residence.

Our Commitment to Diversity

We at UPEI's Ancillary Services are committed to a diverse environment that is both safe and positive for all its students and staff members. Together, we are of diverse racial, ethnic, and national origins as well as class backgrounds. Our views include a broad spectrum of political and religious beliefs, and our sexual orientations differ. We are committed to behaving and expecting others to behave in ways that respect each member. Bigotry has no place within our community, nor does the right to disrespect or degrade another human being on the basis of age, national origin, physical challenge, race, gender, sexual orientation, or religious affiliation.

The University of Prince Edward Island will not tolerate verbal or written abuse, threats, intimidation, violence, or other forms of harassment against any member of its community. Harassment is defined as any attention or conduct (oral, written, graphic, or physical) by an individual or group who knows, or ought reasonably to know, that such attention or conduct is unwelcome/unwanted, offensive, or intimidating. Every individual has the right to an environment characterized by mutual respect. Every individual has the responsibility to treat all members of the University community with respect and without harassment.
