ResNet high speed internet service is provided to all students who are living in residence on the UPEI Campus. There is no added cost for this high speed internet service. Please read the following for additional information to ensure worry free use of the internet while living in residence.
Where can I connect?
Each room or apartment is equipped with outlets that provide access to UPEI's high-speed network. All three residence buildings and the Wanda Wyatt are also equipped with wireless access. Residents may use personal computers to access the University network through these outlets.
Minimum Requirements:
- Windows 98 / ME / 2000 / XP
- 60 MB free disk space
- An installed 10 or 10/100 Base-T Ethernet Adapter or Network Card
- A registered Virus Scanning product
(i.e., Norton Anti-Virus, McAfee, AVG) - One RJ 45 Data Cable (average length used by students has been 6 ft.)
- We suggest installing two software programs: Spybot & Ad-Ware
(free to install at www.webattack.com)
If a student does not have a network card installed, cards can be purchased and installed at some of the local retailers.
It is requested that all students who intend to connect to the Residence network ensure their computers are free from ‘viruses’ or ‘worms’. Failure to complete this check may result in slower connection service for all students.
Purpose of Service
This service allows students unlimited access to e-mail, the web, and other programs through a high-speed connection without tying up phone lines. Policies and regulations regarding computer use will apply to residence students as stipulated by UPEI Computer Services. Violations of these policies will be addressed by the Management of Residence Services. A copy of the Computing Policies and violation sanctions is located on the following page.
Servers/Routers/Switches
Students are not permitted to have more than one device connected through their assigned port. Therefore, the use of routers or switches is prohibited on the residence network. Students are also not permitted to set up servers that will traffic through the residence network. A student who violates either of these policies will have their connection privilege evaluated by Residence Services Management.
