INSTRUCTIONS for the INTERNATIONAL APPLICANTS (NON-VMCAS)


All applicants who are Canadian citizens must have residency in one of the four Atlantic provinces and complete the Atlantic Canadian Supplementary Application. All residents of the United States must apply through VMCAS and complete the VMCAS Supplementary Application.

The language of instruction at UPEI is English. All academically admissible applicants, regardless of their country of origin or citizenship status, are required to demonstrate competence in the English language prior to undertaking full-time credit studies at UPEI. Competence may be demonstrated by any one of the following:

  • Four years of full-time study in English in Canada or in another country where English is the principal language; evidence of bilingualism (English and another language) is acceptable for those applicants educated in Canada in a language other than English.
  • Submission of an official test score at or above the acceptable minimum, such as:
    • TOEFL (Test of English Language as a Foreign Language), minimum 550 on paper test; 213 on computerized test; and on Internet-based test a total of 80 with minimum of 20 in each category;
    • MELAB (Michigan English Language Battery), minimum 80
    • IELTS (International English Language Testing System), minimum 6.5
    • CanTEST, 4.5 minimum
    • CAEL (Canadian Academic English Language Assessment), 60 with minimum 50 in each band.

Please submit your package complete. The submitted package is to include the following:

  1. Undergraduate Application Form (2 pages) 
  2. $75 (cdn$) Application Fee
  3. Supplementary Application Form (pdf), Word, Wordperfect
  4. Official transcripts from all universities attended, even if you have taken only one course. Transcripts submitted with the package are to be in official sealed envelopes. If enrolled in courses, transcripts should also include a list of courses you are taking from September/2011 - April/2012.
  5. (If Required) Letter explaining valid reasons why one or more course prerequisites were not completed as listed in the supplementary application under “Prerequisite Criteria”.

Other Deadlines:

December 15 - Official results of the GRE General test, submitted directly from the test centre; - Proof of English Language Proficiency as stated above (If Required).

January 1 - If enrolled in courses, official transcripts informing us of fall semester results, as well as a list of the courses you are taking January/2012 - April/2012. Transcripts submitted by the applicants must be in official sealed envelopes. Please inform us should there be difficulty in meeting this deadline.

June 1 - If offered a seat to the program, official transcripts stating results from courses taken January/2012 - April/2012. If graduating, please send after your degree has been conferred. Transcripts submitted by an applicant must be in official sealed envelopes.

Completing the Supplementary Application
Applicants are required to download and save the supplementary application to their computer.  It is advised that you work on the supplementary application at your leisure, following the instructions as listed in the supplementary application and taking time to answer all questions fully.  Points given to animal/veterinary experience and extracurricular activities are determined by the information you provide in the supplementary application.  Once you have completed the supplementary application, print, sign, and send with the remainder of the materials required.

GRE Instructions
Applicants contact gre.org. to arrange their GRE General test. The UPEI institutional code is 0941. The test can be completed at the test centre of your choice. Some test centres offer a computer based test, others the paper based test. Both are acceptable. Please note that should a student write the GRE more than once, the highest of all results is used.

Please Note
*Applicants re-applying must submit a new application, application fee, and supplementary application. Applicants can use GRE results from one year to the next. Transcripts are required if further courses have or are currently being taken. If an applicant is re-applying but did not apply the previous year, GRE results and all transcripts are required once again.

Offers of admission to our program are made in March-April. Successful applicants are required to make a $500 ($cdn) non-refundable deposit to hold their seat in the program.
