The Department of Student Services is a partner in the educational mission of the University, and is primarily concerned with students’ personal and academic development. Students have access to a variety of professional supports and resources to assist with reaching their full potential. ACADEMIC ADVISING
Academic services include assistance with the application and admission process, course and faculty selection, and overall system instructions. Students who are considering changing their faculty of study, course registrations or suspending their studies are encouraged to contact the Department of Student Services to meet with an academic advisor and discuss the options available to them.
FIRST YEAR ADVISEMENT CENTRE (FYAC)
All first year students are strongly encouraged to participate in the First-Year Advisement Centre located within the Department of Student Services. First year students can meet with an academic advisor any time to discuss their course requirements and to access early course registration. First year students can also arrange for a personal or group tour of the campus and to meet faculty members in a discipline of their interest.
NEW STUDENT ORIENTATION (NSO)
New students are welcomed and celebrated as part of the annual New Student Orientation program! This crucial program provides students with opportunities to participate in a variety of events to learn more about campus supports and services; to meet other students; and to become actively engaged as a part of the campus community. JUMPSTART
JUMPSTART is an online community for incoming students. Through JUMPSTART, students can: introduce themselves and interact with other incoming students prior to arrival at UPEI; get information to help with the transition into the UPEI community; and connect with various campus services and events. Students who have received an offer from UPEI will get an invitation to join JUMPSTART through http://www.upei.ca/studentservices/prospectivestudents .
CAREER SERVICES CENTER
The Career Services Centre offers professional career counselling and career assessment, along with employment guidance to prospective, current full and part-time students and alumni. Career services include assisting with the career decision making process and the application process to professional and graduate programs. Other career related services include cover letter and resume writing, interview skills and job search strategies. Workshop presentations are also available on career and employment topics. The Centre also hosts career fairs and information sessions related to career development.
COUNSELLING
Professional counsellors provide short-term personal counselling services to full and part-time students. Students may self-refer, or be referred by faculty, staff, physician, friends or family. Students can access counselling support to address personal issues/concerns such as depression, anxiety, relationship difficulties, family conflicts, current or past abuse, crisis intervention, drug and alcohol abuse, sexual orientation, eating disorders, and other stressful circumstances as they arise.
INTERNATIONAL STUDENT SUPPORT
International students planning to study or currently studying at UPEI are encouraged to contact an International Student Advisor in the Department of Student Services. Information, support, and advice is available for immigration, cultural, financial, academic and personal matters, as well as referrals to other services on campus.
FINANCIAL AID
A Financial Aid Advisor is available and can assist students with their financial aid options. Students can learn more about their federal (U.S. and Canadian) and provincial student loan processes, including application and appeal processes. PEI students who may be eligible for the George Coles Bursary and Island Student Awards should visit the Financial Aid Advisor if they have any questions. The Financial Aid Advisor also exists to inform students of other financial resources that might be available to them
SCHOLARSHIPS AND AWARDS OFFICE
The Scholarships and Awards Office provides students with the information necessary to learn about and apply for scholarships, bursaries, and awards. THE DIVERSITY OFFICE
The Diversity Office works to ensure that all students have equitable opportunities, supports, and resources on campus, regardless of gender, socio-economic background, race/ethnic or cultural group, sexuality, religion, age, or ability.
HEALTH CENTER
The Health Centre is located on the second floor of the W. A. Murphy Student Centre; the telephone number is (902) 566-0616. The Health Centre is open to all students, Monday to Thursday, from September through April. The Health Centre staff promotes health education on campus and co-ordinates referrals to the health care system of Prince Edward Island. Students are reminded that the medical insurance plan offered by the Student Union is compulsory for all students registered for full-time attendance, unless they present proof of being enrolled in an alternate plan. For deadlines on "opting out" of the insurance plan, contact the UPEI Student Union Office at (902) 566-0530.
