Overview
Join a fast-paced, rewarding profession where every image tells a story

Radiography utilizes ionizing radiation (X-rays) to obtain detailed images of human anatomy for the purpose of diagnosing and treating a wide variety of medical conditions. Radiographers are vital members of the healthcare team, who work in hospitals and clinics performing imaging procedures including:

  • General imaging (x-rays of chest, abdomen, skeletal system, etc.)
  • CT scans (highly detailed 3-D images of the body)
  • Mammography (images to detect breast cancer)
  • Mobile imaging (imaging performed bedside on very ill patients)
  • Fluoroscopy (dynamic moving images acquired for special procedures and in operating rooms)

The Radiography program at UPEI is a unique learning opportunity that combines hands-on learning in hospitals across Prince Edward Island with in-depth study of various subjects including human anatomy, pathology, medical physics, and patient care.

Who it’s for?

This program is for individuals who:

  • Understand the importance of effective communication and providing care to patients
  • Enjoy working with technology and analyzing images
  • Thrive in a team environment
  • Appreciate hands-on learning opportunities
  • Excel at critical thinking and problem solving

Six students are accepted into the Radiography program each year; this small class size allows for an intimate learning environment and excellent instructor-to-student ratios that set students up for success.

The deadline to apply to the Radiography Program is December 1 (to begin the program the following September).

Rachel Waddell, UPEI Radiography graduate

Rachel Waddell
Medical Radiation Technologist

“Following graduation from the UPEI Radiography Program in May 2022, I began working at four different hospitals across the island, most recently accepting a permanent MRT position at QEH.

I enjoy working in diagnostic imaging because we help numerous patients in different stages along their healthcare journey. In addition, the profession allows for a variety of work settings within one hospital, making every day unique and exciting! Not only is the work rewarding, but I am also privileged to work with remarkable technologists and staff across PEI.

The UPEI Radiography program provided me with knowledge, experience, and guidance to excel in the profession. Participating in the didactic and clinical portion of the program simultaneously, allowed me to feel confident in my skills and excited to begin working. The small class size and instructors at UPEI Radiography created a terrific education experience that I am grateful to have been a part of!"

Admissions Criteria
What's Required for Radiography Admission?

This four-year degree program requires students to obtain approximately half their academic credits at each of the two institutions. Admission is by competition, following the process set out below, after the completion of a required set of courses in at least one year of university studies. A limited number of students are admitted each year.

High School applicants must apply to a Bachelor of Science with a Major to complete the required prerequisite courses. An applicant is eligible to apply to the program once they are at least enrolled in all of the prerequisite courses.

Admission requirements

Normally applicants take ten three-semester hour courses or their equivalent(s). To be considered for the program a student must complete the required Biology, Physics, Chemistry,  and Calculus requirements. Applicants who are admitted with the minimum required courses must complete any outstanding first year requirements in a subsequent semester, with Coordinator's approval required prior to registering in them.

Students are expected to complete a degree at UPEI within a 10-year period (See Academic Regulation #2 in the Academic Calendar). To meet this regulation the prerequisite first-year courses must be taken within the last six years prior to the submission of an application to the Radiography program.

Applicants who have completed any of the pre-requisite first year courses seven years prior to the anticipated start of their Radiography program should contact the coordinator of the Radiography program or the Dean of Science.

Please refer to the UPEI Academic Calendar for complete admissions information.
