Rising to the Challenge - UPEI Budget Highlights 2013-2014

Dear members of the UPEI community,

The Board of Governors met last night and approved the University’s 2013-14 Operating Budget. The highlights of the budget are attached and the full document can be found online at http://files.upei.ca/finance/operating_budget_2013-2014.pdf

This budget protects our students and programs and strikes a balance between tuition revenue increases and expenditure reductions preserving services, maintaining the quality of our programs, and ensuring that tuition remains affordable.

I understand that there has been concern across campus about the implementation and timing of budget decisions, especially those related to human resources. Even though the University has worked diligently to minimize the consequence to staff and faculty, unfortunately, some job reductions will be necessary to maintain a balanced budget. Please be assured that the University cares deeply about our faculty and staff, and the senior management team has been working closely with the unions to lessen budget impacts. We will continue to do so as well as pursue opportunities to grow our resources, preserving employment as best we can.

An HR team is in place and as soon as the transition plan is finalized, they will begin communicating with the campus community about the process and key dates.

Now that the budget has been approved, we can’t lose sight of the fact that we are in the midst of the most important week of the University calendar. We expect 951 students to graduate—the Class of 2013 is the largest graduating class to date at UPEI!

As we celebrate this momentous occasion with our graduates, I wish to take a moment to thank all of you who have worked so hard, and with great dedication, to ensure that our students have had a wonderful learning experience at UPEI and will have a joyous and memorable grad week.

There is much more work yet to complete as we continue to confront fiscal challenges, but we must keep in mind that we are not without options to improve our situation. Student recruitment and conversion efforts are ongoing and I encourage you to promote our University at every opportunity. The recruitment team is reporting strong uptake on incoming student advising appointments and positive engagement with prospective students and their parents.

I hope you plan to attend convocation to celebrate with our students and the entire University community during ceremonies on Saturday.

Best wishes,

Alaa Abd-El-Aziz
President and Vice-Chancellor
