Accomplishing great things, together

Dear members of the University community,

Since my family and I arrived at the University of Prince Edward Island in 2011, students, faculty, and staff, as well as the residents of this beautiful Island, have gone out of their way to make us feel welcome. We are so pleased to call PEI our home and to have the chance to raise our family here.

I am deeply committed to helping all UPEI students succeed, both during their studies and after graduation. Two years ago, after input from UPEI stakeholders, we introduced the UPEI Strategic Plan (2013–18), which is guiding us towards becoming a leader in delivering outstanding experiential learning opportunities that encourage our students to develop to their full potential. The plan has already served as the foundation for a number of initiatives, including the School of Sustainable Design Engineering and the University’s academic planning process which is being led by the Vice-President Academic and the Vice-President Research and Graduate Studies.

In spite of challenging economic times, I am proud to say that the University has consistently delivered balanced budgets based on academic priorities, and that we have helped offset declines in the Island's student demographic by increasing the percentage of students from other parts of Canada and around the world. I am looking forward to continuing to work with our faculty, students, staff, and the senior management team in ensuring that the budget always puts teaching, learning, and research first, and that we continue to attract the very best people to our University. Earning a post-secondary degree can be difficult and stressful; therefore, I am also committed to continuing to collaborate with the President of the Student Union and others across our campus to improve our students’ experience during their time with us.

I believe we have made a difference, yet there is still much left to accomplish. I am very honoured by the confidence that the Board of Governors has extended to me and for offering me the opportunity to serve UPEI as its President and Vice-Chancellor for a second term. I will continue to move forward with you to fulfill the strategic vision we have all worked so hard to create and achieve to date.

As a campus community, we are dedicated to making UPEI an educational destination for Island, Canadian, and international students. We need look no further than our esteemed alumni to see the results of the outstanding education that UPEI provides.

I invite you to join me in fostering the development of tomorrow’s leaders who will emerge from their studies ready to successfully contribute to the advancement of our local and global communities.

Let’s accomplish great things, together.

Best wishes,

Alaa
