Public Sector Leadership Development Program

Welcome

As any organization, the Public Service in Canada is facing many challenges today including, increasing demands for more and better services, scarcity of resources, financial and human and increasing complexity of workloads and relationships.

Kevin Lynch, former Clerk of Privy Council quoted Thomas Friedman: "... in the globalization system ... one of the most important and enduring competitive advantages that a country can have today is a lean, effective, honest civil service". He was articulating that there is a strong correlation between a country's competitiveness and prosperity and the quality of its public sector. And, this correlation holds whether the country is developing or developed; whether it is poor or rich.

While there are many views on how the public sector should respond to these challenges, one common view is the need for excellence in leadership. More than ever, the public service needs people who can make a difference in leading and managing in both the good times and the difficult times.

The University of Prince Edward Island’s Public Sector Leadership Development Program has been designed to  develop and strengthen the leadership competencies to meet these challenges. We deliver interactive, practical, and relevant workshops that enable participants to discover their leadership potential and thrive when faced with the complex demands in the public sector today and tomorrow.

Participants learn from leading faculty and practicing professionals from across Canada, and are immersed in an environment that provides them with the time to learn, engage, reflect, and practice new behaviours.

Throughout the program, the participants have the opportunity to network with their peers at various levels of government, to share and learn from each other’s experiences, and establish enduring professional relationships.

The full program consists of 9 modules taken over a year period. Individual modules are available. Please see our schedule for more information.
