ITSS is pleased to announce a new E-Mail service for Student E-Mail provided through Google Apps for Education. All current students at UPEI have had their E-Mail migrated from the old system to Google Apps automatically.
New students will start with Google Apps. ITSS is pleased to be able to offer this service to all students. We are confident that this solution will address our student’s needs for a robust and dependable E-Mail, calendaring and document creation and storage system.
As with any transition it is normal to have some questions. We have created this FAQ to address some of the questions you may have. ITSS staff are ready to assist with any issues you may have. Google Apps FAQ for UPEI Students
What is Google Apps ?
- Google Apps is a free collaboration and communication suite of applications for educational institutions. It allows UPEI to provide web based tools such as E-Mail, Calendar, and much more with our University branding. It is being used by millions of students around the world.
What if you already have a personal Google/Gmail Account ?
- Your UPEI Google Apps account is totally separate from your personal Google/Gmail Account, so nothing will change about your personal Google account.
What is my UPEI E-Mail Address on Google Apps ?
- You student E-Mail address will remain your username@upei.ca
How do I access my E-Mail/Google Apps ?
- Using your web browser, goto http://mymail.upei.ca You will be presented with a UPEI login screen which uses an authentication protocol called Shibboleth so we can authenticate your Google Apps session using your UPEI credentials.
I have forgotten/lost my password ?
- Students can reset their passwords from the UPEI Campus Login Page: https://secure.upei.ca/cls/login.html You will be required to have your student ID and Pin # in order to login to Campus Login.
I prefer to get my E-Mail at another account or E-Mail address. Is it possible to forward my mail to another Email address ?
How much space is available with my UPEI Google Apps account ?
- Your account will have around 25 GB of storage, which is significantly more space than with our old system.
What is the maximum size file attachment I can include with an E-Mail ?
- Currently, we recommend not going over 10MB in size for file attachments in E-Mail. If you have a larger file to get to someone, please contact ITSS for assistance.
There are no folders in Google Apps ? How do i organize my messages ?
- Instead of folders, Google uses labels. Labels are similar to folders, but offer flexibility and is a powerful way to categorize your E-Mail. Google also has a help page on Using Labels: http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=118708&from=6560&rd=1
How do you recommend I get my UPEI E-Mail ?
- There are a number of supported web browsers that work well with Google Apps. Here is our recommended list: - Mozilla Firefox - Google Chrome - Internet Explorer - Safari. Please ensure to have the latest version of your favorite browser installed.
Will my E-Mail and other information at Google Apps be kept private and secure ?
- Yes, the E-Mail and other data is owned by UPEI and it's students - not Google. Google is simply the service provider. These and other concerns have been addressed by an educational contract between UPEI and Google. - As part of this agreement, Google will not place ad's in your email, nor will you be presented with any ad's when reading your E-Mail, calendar or documents. In addition, Google will not be searching through E-Mail for marketing purposes. The educational agreement prohibits that activity.
