Help for Visitors

How do visitors/guest presenters access a classroom computer?

A UPEI network username and password is required for all classroom computers. As a reminder, it is not permissible to loan out your own account username and password for others to use, as described in the Acceptable Use Policy.

If a guest account is needed for visiting faculty or presenters, the sponsoring Faculty or Department can request temporary credentials directly from the IT Systems & Services Helpdesk by phone at 566-0465 or by email at helpdesk@upei.ca.

Visitors of the Robertson Library an also obtain a guest account from the Circulation Desk.

Guests may also connect their own laptop or other mobile device to the classroom data projectors without the need to access the classroom computer. However, if wireless internet connection is required, guest credentials will be needed in order to connect to the PANTHERNET-OPEN wireless network. Guests visiting from other educational institutions may also be able to use the eduroam wireless network (so long as their home institution is subscribed to the eduroam network). Please see the wireless network FAQ below for more information.

How do I connect to PANTHERNET-OPEN?

This network does not offer encryption of wireless traffic, therefore any Internet activity should be considered as insecure.  However, no additional software or configuration is required to make the connection.  Visitors to UPEI must obtain "guest" credentials from their sponsoring Faculty or Department in order to log in to the PANTHERNET-OPEN portal.

To log into PANTHERNET-OPEN, you must have DHCP enabled on your wireless card interface. When you search for wireless networks on campus, select PANTHERNET-OPEN and connect.   Once connected, bring up your favorite Internet Browser (IE, Firefox, etc) and you will notice that the start page in your browser has been redirected to an authentication page.  After entering your UPEI username and password you will be allowed full access to the Internet so that you can read email, browse the web, etc.

Although there is no encryption on PANTHERNET-OPEN, web sites performing sensitive transactions generally use an encryption protocol called SSL (Secure Socket Layer) so you are not totally without protection.
