Island Studies at UPEI began in 1983 with the founding of the Institute of Island Studies. Since then, the disciplne has become a recognized field of academic study. In 2000 it was named one of UPEI’s seven research constellations, and it has since gone on to become one of the University’s leading centres of expertise. UPEI’s focus on islands is now recognized around the world, with the Institute's research activities leading the way.
As a result of the Institute's efforts through the 1990s, Island Studies at UPEI is now made up of the following components:
- Institute of Island Studies
- Canada Research Chair in Island Studies
- Dr. Godfrey Baldacchino's Research
- Master of Arts in Island Studies (MAIS)
- Minor in Island Studies
This fall, the Institute of Island Studies will be hosting two conferences:
- Constance MacFarlane Seaplant Symposium September 24 – 27, 2008 and Seaplant Product Trade Show September 25
